DESCRIPTION:

ProfiTech is a free 48-hour International hackathon for anyone interested in Fintech. Our aim is to help in the development of financial technology by providing individuals with a platform to learn, network and develop. We believe that by doing so we can spark an interest in Financial Technology amongst individuals and give them the chance to come up with innovative and efficient solutions to common financial problems.

We understand that many people participating in this hackathon may not have experience with Finance or Computer Science. Based on your knowledge and skill-set, we want you to categorise yourself into the following groups. (All groups will be judged independently)

1. Fintech

This category is for individuals or groups that already have knowledge and experience in the finance and technological field. Based on this experience, we want you to construct a tool that can:

• Manage financial assets by predicting the future behaviour and trends of stocks/mutual funds/options.

• Examine the user’s short and long term financial goals and recommend various different investment options.

• Analyze the market trends of the investment including past returns, yield potential, volatility, volume, stock price movements and expected future risk and rewards.

• Make a trading bot and explain the strategy behind it.

• You are not limited by the above-mentioned tools and are allowed to create anything in this field. We encourage you to be innovative and think outside the box. If you feel like your idea is conflicting and might not fit this category then feel free to email the managers and ask them directly.

2. Finance

This category is for the students who have knowledge in the field of finance but don't have any programming experience. We are providing you with the following question/situation:

- You are a senior analyst at a bank who is looking to earn more than just average pay.

- For the past few years you have been trading manually, and spending long hours on building your own strategies and techniques (technical and fundamental analysis) and then using it to make gains from daily trades. Your aim as a daily trader is to increase your side income by earning a suitable return on your investment.

- However, as the year-end is approaching you have to work extra hours to ensure everything is wrapped up by the banks' financial closing which is why you are unable to trade and miss out on entering into the stocks at the right time leading to low profits or even losses at times.

- This is when you decide to automate your trading strategy by developing a trading method ( could be tools/ bots/ analysis/ strategies)that will automatically enter into transactions i.e., buy the stock on your behalf and exit from it based on the trading strategies/techniques and target profit you set for the trading bot.

- Keeping this situation in mind, think of a trading strategy/technique that you would like to propose to a tech team to implement into your trading tools. You have to pitch this idea using a presentation and a PDF document (keep the documents creative and detailed, since this is the only way to communicate with your team during the pandemic)

3. Technology

The last category is for students proficient in programming but does not possess financial knowledge. We will be presenting very specific financial problems in the format of CS problems. These problems will still give you space for creativity while giving you the perfect amount of guidance to solve finance-based questions. You will have to understand these problems and come up with good, efficient solutions. In case of any doubt, you can ask for clarifications on the discord channel

CS Questions - ProfiTech

 Question 1:

Investment Assistant – Build an interface to assist individuals with their investment plans.

The interface accepts the income and amount to be invested. The algorithm studies the trend history and expected growth predictions of the stocks based on the information gathered from a variety of datasets such as Twitter, Google, Reddit, Yahoo and so on which are best suited under the client’s investment bracket for Intra-day Trading.

Download historical prices from: https://finance.yahoo.com/

Question 2

Performance Predictor – Develop an interface that uses numerical analysis from datasets containing historical prices of popular stocks and implements sentimental analysis on News Headlines relevant to the stocks for Long-Term Investments

Download historical prices from: https://finance.yahoo.com/

Download textual (news) data from:

https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/DPQMQH Or any other relevant website

Question 3:

Data Analyst – Write an algorithm that filters the top stocks, in real-time, and the factors that  contribute to their success and how those factors can affect the stocks of your company*.

*For this question, you are supposed to choose an arbitrary company as “your own” and implement the  algorithm to check the growth of your company as compared to your competitors

Question 4:

Build an algorithm that uses image recognition to collect all the news headlines related to the stock, uploaded by the user, and analyze the data to predict stock prices. *For news headlines, refer to https://www.kaggle.com/aaron7sun/stocknews

Question 5:

Develop an algorithm that helps the user in filtering out stocks based on quantitative parameters like Market Cap, Dividend Yield, Price Earnings Ratio, Price to Book Ratio, Average Volatility Expense Ratio etc.

*For getting the dataset of the quantitative parameters, refer to https://finance.yahoo.com/

Question 6:

Develop an algorithm that performs technical analysis on stocks. The algorithm should screen the stocks based on factors like price and market capitalization, sector, momentum etc. From the result, it should then look for stocks with good entry points. Some of the entry strategies include breakout in the direction of the trend (new highs and lows), pullbacks etc. You are allowed to explore and work with your own strategies as well.

*For getting the dataset of the qualitative parameters, refer to https://finance.yahoo.com/

Question 7:

Construct a trading bot:

  • That periodically filters out tweets across Twitter according to the user's preference i.e., filtering tweets in particular to a specific stock or a market or according to sentiments

  • At the same time keeping a check on market price movement at every second across multiple financial instruments

  • To predict a pattern regarding the best entry and exit prices for short or long term investment opportunities with respect to the overall stock market/bond market/currency market/crypto

Question 8:

    Construct a tool:

  • That analyses the same commodity/financial instrument listed across different markets (stock markets/bond markets/currency markets) based on the country using charts and technical indicators

  • To predict a pattern/trend i.e., early entry and exit points into the trade/investment for short/long term or short selling

Note: You may choose any one question. You are allowed to add more aspects to your projects but keep in mind that your project delivers a proper solution to the original problem first. You can refer to any other sources or datasets that are available online. Please mention the question number in your submission on Devpost.
